Chinese Scientists

Is there a word for “planet” in Chinese?

I don’t think there is a word for planet. Chinese scientists could never distinguish the difference between stars and planets and hence all of their celestial bodies are named “something star” Please correct me if I am wrong for I am taking Chinese class.

planet is 行星 (xíngxīng)–”walking star”
star is 星星 (xīngxing)–”star star”

星 (xīng) literally means “star”, but might be better understood as “heavenly body” or “point of light”.

The visible planets are named for the five different elements under ancient Chinese philosophy.

Mercury 水星 (shuǐxīng)–”water star”
Venus 金星 (jīnxīng)–”metal star” or “gold star”
Mars 火星 (huǒxīng)–”fire star”
Jupiter 木星 (mùxīng)–”wood star”
Saturn 土星 (tǔxīng)–”earth star”

And here are the other planets:

Uranus 天王星 (tiānwángxīng)–”king of the heavens star”
Neptune 海王星 (hǎiwángxīng)–”king of the sea star”
Pluto 冥王星 (míngwángxīng )–”king of the deep star” or “king of the night star” (I know, technically no longer a planet)

As “gigantic monster reptile attacks New York” movies go, you’ve got to admit that Godzilla delivers the goods, although its critical drubbing and box-office disappointment were arguably deserved. It’s a shameless, uninspired crowd pleaser that’s content to serve up familiar action with the advantage of really fantastic special effects, and if you expect nothing more you’ll be one among millions o…

If you were to argue that Mel Brooks’s Young Frankenstein ranks among the top-ten funniest movies of all time, nobody could reasonably dispute the claim. Spoofing classic horror in the way that Brooks’s previous film Blazing Saddles sent up classic Westerns, the movie is both a loving tribute and a raucous, irreverent parody of Universal’s classic horror films Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Fran…
